Mark J. Gerencser is a long-time BENS member and director and currently serves as the Chairman of its Board and Executive Committee.
During his professional career, Gerencser spent 31 years with Booz Allen Hamilton as a recognized strategy and technology expert and senior partner. He led Booz Allen’s 20,000-consultant Government Business in the U.S. and abroad and, before retiring in 2013, served as the managing partner of its Global Commercial Business, addressing energy, healthcare, finance, and industrial sectors. He was Chair of the Partnership Committee and served on the Board of Directors including the Audit Committee, Personnel Committee, and Chair of the Nominating Committee.
Gerencser has since angel funded several start-ups, including PC services company CyberSpa and internet of things (IOT) encryption and networking company Welbeck Security. He also created UMUC Ventures and served as its Chairman of the Board which incubated several successful technology start-ups in higher education. He now serves as an independent director on the corporate boards of Alion Science and Technology and Guidehouse Consulting (formerly PWC Government Services). Previously, he served as an independent board director for Sotera Defense and Orion System Integrators in preparation of their sale.
Gerencser was nominated by the White House and confirmed by the Senate Armed Services Committee as a member of the National Security Education Board, chaired by the Secretary of Defense. He served for six years as Chairman of the Board of Visitors for University of Maryland University College (UMUC), where he received the President’s Medal for leadership in advancing higher education. He also served for more than a decade on the National Security Agency Advisory Board’s Emerging Technologies Panel advising on commercial best practices for R&D, acquisition and emerging science/technology solutions.
Consulting Magazine named him one of the Top 25 Most Influential Consultants in the World and ExecutiveBiz named him one of the Top 10 Game Changers in Washington, DC. In 2014, he was inducted into the Wash100, the premier group of leaders recognized for vision, innovation, and achievement for American citizens.
Gerencser earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University College of Engineering and an MS in Technology Management from University of Maryland University College.
